Female population and number of live born children
The 2023 Census of Population, Households and Dwellings collected data related on the number of live-born children to female population aged 15 and over. The response was collected based on statement.
In Montenegro, there are 316 826 women of which 262 653 are aged 15 and over.
In fertile age, there are 142 144 which makes 44.87% of the total number of women. Fertile age is a period in woman's life when she is able to have birth and in science it is defined as the period from 15-49 years.
Observed by municipalities, the share of women in fertile period in the total number of women is highest in: Budva (50.23%); followed by Podgorica (48.42%); and Tuzi (46.88%). The least biological potential for the reproduction of population is in municipalities: Pluzine (34.60%); Savnik (35.85%); and Pljevlja (36.96%), where there is more women older than 50 then women aged from 15-49 years.
In Montenegro, from the total number of women aged 15 and over, 180 566 gave birth, i.e. 68.75%. With the increase of age of women, it is also increased the number of women who gave birth.
The highest share of women who gave birth in the total number of women aged 15 and over is in Pljevlja (74.04%), while the minority is in Podgorica where 65.95% women aged 15 and over gave birth.
In Montenegro, an average number of children per woman who gave birth is 2.5. An average number of children per woman who gave birth is the highest in Petnjica and Plav, and it is 3.7 and 3.4 children. Below the average number of children in Montenegro,women in Cetinje, Pljevlja, Podgorica, Bar, Kotor, Tivat, Herceg Novi, and Budva gave birth.
The average number of children increases with the age. The lowest is for women aged 15-19 years, and it is 1.3 children per woman who gave birth, while for women aged 75 years and over this average is three or more children.
A majority of women (41.07%) gave birth to two children, then 27.34% of them gave birth to three children. With one child there is 16.97% of women, while with four and more live-born children, there are 14.62% of women.
Women who gave birth aged 15-29 years mostly have one child, while all other age groups are characterised by the majority of women with two children.
