Legal basis for production of population projections is Law on Official Statistics and Official Statistical System of Montenegro (Official Gazette of Montenegro 18/12).

Purpose of population projection production
Results of population projections are necessary for economic and social planning in: health, education, economy, urbanism, social infrastructure, finances, pension and disability insurance, etc.
Data sources and coverage
Population projections are produced using the data from all regular statistical surveys – on births, deaths, and migrations within the observed period.
Population projections represent the combination of hypotheses on future level of fertility (low, middle, high, constant), mortality (expected, constant), and migration (expected, zero, constant).
A producer of population projections is Statistical Office of Montenegro. The population projections in Montenegro are produced once in a ten years after the census.
