Population of Montenegro by National, i.e. Ethnical Affiliation, Religion, Mother Tongue, and Language a Person Usually Speaks

Results in this release refer to number and structure of population by national, i.e. ethnical affiliation, religion, mother tongue, and language a person usually speaks, at the level of Montenegro, and by municipalities.

Pursuant to the Methodology for Preparation, Organization, and Implementation of Census, for questions on national, i.e. ethnical affiliation, as well as questions on religion, mother tongue, and language a person usually speaks, answer was based on a free self-declaration. If the person did not want to declare himself/herself on the mentioned questions, the answer 'Does not want to declare' was entered.

The order of presenting national, i.e. ethnical affiliation, as well as mother tongue and language a person usually speaks, is defined in line with the Constitution of Montenegro, while other modalities are presented in alphabetical order.

In category 'Other nationalities, i.e. ethnical affiliation/religion/mother tongue/language a person usually speaks', there are classified occurences that make the number of population less than 150 at the level of Montenegro.

In category 'Other', there are occurences that could not be classified in any of categories of nationality, i.e. ethnic affiliation/religion/mother tonuge/language a person usually speaks.

According to the results of census implemented in 2023 in Montenegro, 256 436 or 41.12% of persons declared as Montenegrins; 205 370 or 32.93% as Serbs; 58 956 or 9.45% as Bosniaks; 30 978 or 4.97% as Albanians; 12 824 or 2.06% as Russians; and 10 162 or 1.63% as Muslims. Data related to the religion structure show that 443 394 or 71.10% of persons declared as Ortodox; 124 668 or 19.99% Islam; 20 408 or 3.27% Catholic; while 14 260 or 2.29% of persons declared as atheist. Census data show that 269 307 or 43.18% of persons declared Serbian language as their mother tounge. Montenegrin language is mother tounge for 215 299 or 34.52% of persons; Bosnian language for 43 470 or 6.97%; Albanian language for 32 725 or 5.25%; then Russian language for 14 731 or 2.36%; and SerbianCroatian language is mother tounge for 12 999 or 2.08% of persons. Out of the total number of population in Montenegro, 271 422 or 43.52% declared that they ussualy speak Serbian language. Montenegrin is ussualy spoken language for 225 956 persons or 36.23%; Bosnian for 41 636 or 6.68%; Albanian for 27 979 or 4.49%; Russian for 13 783 or 2.21%; and Serbian-Croatian for 9 421 or 1.51%. Question on national, i.e. ethnical affiliation was responded by 17 907 or 2.88% of citizens with answer 'Does not want to declare'; question on religion 13 093 or 2.10%, question on mother tongue 10 691 or 1.71%, and question on language a person usually speaks 11 176 or 1.79% of citizens.
